about

Traditional fiddler, banjo player and singer Brad Leftwich backed up by his all-star Humdingers: Linda Higginbotham on clawhammer banjo, banjo uke, & harmony vocals, Sam Bartlett on guitar, and Abby Ladin on bass and harmony vocals. Includes 3 gourd banjo solos by Brad.

As great as Brad and Linda are as a duo, hearing them with their band The Humdingers (with guitar player Sam Bartlett and bass whisperer Abby Ladin) adds another dimension to their music.
By now, Brad’s incredible fiddling and banjo playing need no more mention. And, though I’ve already told you about Linda’s banjo uke playing, it is as wonderfully played and mixed here as ever. Banjo-uke has the potential to be awfully overwhelming but in Linda’s skilled hands that never happens. Her banjo playing is also beautiful here too.
Old-time music is like a painting that is built up over years of playing and recording. It can be a challenge to engineer for the right mix and musical tones. You have to lay down the bass coat (pun intended) then build upon it so all the instruments are there but blended—to give you a full image and sound so you can hear all of the instruments but never allow any one to overwhelm. Towards that end, Abby’s exquisitely timed bass playing is simple and solid and when combined with Sam’s guitar playing it provides a solid foundation. It’s always a challenge to get the mix right in string band music, but these folks get it perfect.—Dan Levenson, Banjo Newsletter
