This unusual tune is from a 1939 Lomax field recording of Lake Porter (1854-1945), a Texas fiddler, cowboy, and lawman. He called it “Billy in the Lowground,” but we’ve dubbed it in honor of the brush country of southeastern Texas, where Porter was raised and from where he joined cattle drives up the trail to Kansas. He played fiddle as his horse was led around the herd after dark to keep the cattle calm. Fiddle tuned GDAE.
